Spelaeogriphacea (Peracarida, Malacostraca)

Description. Head. Rostrum present; eyes stalked; visual elements absent; ocular scale absent; naupliar eyes absent. Antennules (antenna 1) biramous; peduncle and flagellum distinct; endopod well developed; exopod well developed, whip-like. Antennae (antenna 2) biramous; exopod forming a scaphocerite. Mandible uniramous; palp present (reduced). Maxillipeds, 1 pair. Thorax. Carapace present, univalved, enclosing first and second thoracic somites, laterally compressed, smooth. Thorax and abdomen differentiated. Peraeopods (legs) 7 pairs; biramous, or uniramous; non-phyllopodous; undifferentiated (simple). Peraeopod 1 (leg 1) simple. Peraeopod 2 (leg 2) simple. Peraeopod 3 (leg 3) simple. Abdomen with 6 somites. Epimera absent. Pleopods present, 5 pairs (fifth pair vestigial); well developed, broad and flat. Uropods well developed, 1 pair, positioned ventrolaterally; rami present, exopod with diaresis, partial or complete; endopod without statocyst. Telson present (not fused to pleon).

Larval development. Epimorphic. Embryos carried in ventral thoracic brood pouch.

Habitat. Freshwater caves, aquifers.

Distribution. South Africa; north-western Australia and Brazil.
