Harpinioides sp.

Harpinioides drepanocheir. --Stebbing, 1910: 592.

Type material. HOLOTYPE: male, 3.7 mm, AM P46488.

Type locality. east of Providential Head, Wattamolla, New South Wales (34º08'S 151º08.5'E), 45-50 m depth.

Description. Based on holotype male, AM P46488. Head rostrum present, short; eyes present, eyes round or oval. Body dorsally smooth. Mandible molar conical, setose. Lower lip inner lobes present; outer lobes with broad gap. Maxilla 1 inner plate apically setose. Maxilla 2 inner plate subequal or slightly broader than outer; inner plate slender medial setae few or absent, without oblique row of slender setae.

Peraeon. Gnathopod 1 subchelate; subequal to gnathopod 2; coxa weakly or not produced anteroventrally; carpus not cantilevered, shorter than propodus, weakly lobed; propodus without robust setae along posterior margin (adults); dactylus narrowing distally, apically acute or subacute. Gnathopod 2 not sexually dimorphic. Gnathopod 2 subchelate; carpus not cantilevered, weakly lobed, shorter than propodus; propodus without robust setae along posterior margin (adults); dactylus narrowing distally, apically acute or subacute. Peraeopods 3-4 propodus simple, with distal slender setae. Peraeopods 5-7 dactyli inner margins smooth or minutely castellate.

Pleon. Pleonites neither tricarinate. Epimeron 3 posteroventral margin smooth, corner broadly rounded. Uropod 1 outer ramus shorter than inner. Telson notched or entire, without large apical robust setae.

Habitat. Marine; soft bottom.

Depth zones. Continental shelf (45 to 50 m).

Remarks. Stebbing (1910) recorded H. drepanocheir from off Wattamolla, New South Wales. We have material of Harpinioides from very near Wattamolla which appears to be an undescribed species. Apparently Stebbing's (1910) identification was wrong and H. drepanocheir does not occur in Australia.

Distribution. New South Wales: off Wattamolla (Stebbing, 1910); off Providential Head (AM).

Geographic areas. South-eastern Australia.
